Loews Philadelphia Hotel |
Link to Hospitality |
The PSFS Building completed in 1932 by George Howe and William Lescaze served as Philadelphia Saving Fund Society’s new banking headquarters. It was widely hailed as the most significant architectural structure of its time and was America’s first identifiable International Style high-rise. BLT’s award-winning adaptive re-use of this landmark building on the National Register of Historic Places, transformed it into the first class luxury convention center Loews Philadelphia Hotel.
The floor plates of the 33-story tower allowed for simple division into approximately 580 hotel rooms. The grand corporate spaces such as the beautifully detailed board room on the 33rd floor easily translated into three very special meeting rooms, while the original 2nd floor banking room makes a spectacular statement as the hotel's grand ballroom. The exteriors were fully restored and enhanced by a stainless steel canopy. A 3-story addition at the back of the original 550,000 SF steel structure provides two additional ballrooms and supporting food service operations.
The conversion of this iconic office building demonstrates how 20th-century architectural landmarks can be successfully revived for the 21st century.
