BLT’s task was to design a new building that would simultaneously form the missing hub of student life, anchor the new south campus, and establish the ambience of a traditional college campus where there previously was none. At 78,000 SF, the 2½-story building is a gabled structure with a metal roof and a brick arched arcade, invoking the handmade sculptural detail of traditional buildings.

Zoned for simultaneous public and student use, the facility includes a 1,000-seat event gymnasium, separate recreation gymnasium, natatorium, weight and fitness areas, and a 1/10 mile track extended over the recreation gymnasium.  Supplementing these uses are miscellaneous student gathering spaces including café, games and lounge areas and support spaces such as lockers, classroom and administrative. All of the major interior spaces are marked by the presence of the exposed structure of the gabled roofs and are linked by internal views from one space to the next.  The presence of people in each part of the building is always visible in all other parts, letting activity in one area create a sense of life in the others and emphasizing the sense of community.
