The Gallery at Market East I & II |
Link to Shopping |
One of the nation’s first downtown indoor shopping malls, the Gallery at Market East transported the suburban shopping center experience into the heart of the city. Conceived to reverse the decline in center city retail activities, the complex spans five city blocks and at 1.3 million SF is downtown Philadelphia's largest enclosed shopping center.
Gallery I, designed by BLT’s predecessor firm Bower and Fradley Architects, was the first phase in the revitalization of the City’s central eastern commercial artery, extending between 8th and 10th streets along the north side of Market East. The 400,000 SF, 4-level sky-lighted mall is characterized by its straightforward axial plan, restrained detailing and simple vocabulary of materials.
Gallery II by BLT/CLA Joint Venture Architects extended the enclosed retailing complex westward to 11th Street, and added a new 190,000 SF department store. The glass-enclosed, 4-level mall includes 170,000 SF of leasable retail area and shares major public circulation spaces with the Commuter Rail Station and tunnel over which it is built. Continuity is maintained via a pedestrian bridge over 9th Street and an uninterrupted concourse running below grade to Gallery I.
