Closure of the Defense Personnel Supply Center (DPSC) in south Philadelphia and realignment of the former Aviation Supply Office (ASO) in northeast Philadelphia resulted in a new combined operation to procure, test and arrange distribution of food, clothing, medical and industrial supplies to Federal facilities worldwide. BLT was given the challenge to house this combined operation.

The solution was to renovate more than 700,000 SF of space in several obsolete and under-utilized World War II-era warehouses at ASO to accommodate flexible office space with fully networked computer capabilities and support functions. Program elements include offices, test kitchens and laboratories, training rooms, fitness center and food service for more than 3,000 employees. Strategically located lounge areas and dramatic carpets alleviate the monotony of the buildings’ 1000 foot long corridors. Cumbersome bay widths were overcome with an innovative universal plan for workstations to support flexibility and mobility. The success of this project was recognized with an Honor Award from the NAVFAC (Naval Facilities Engineering Command) Design Awards Program.
