For almost two decades BLT was responsible for master planning and phased reorganization and expansion of the Baltimore Museum of Art, with initial work involving the upgrading of mechanical and electrical systems.  The original neoclassical 1920's building designed by John Russell Pope, and later additions, were restored inside and out.  Support facilities were reorganized within former service areas.  The 40,000 SF Northeast Wing houses changing exhibition galleries, vaults, a public entry court, a museum bookstore, the 400-seat Meyerhoff Theater and a café overlooking the Wurtzburger Sculpture Garden, completed a few years before.

The construction of the 40,000 SF West Wing to house the collection of 20th century art was designed to contrast with the neoclassicism of the original building in order to express the modernity of its contents.  A dramatically lit rotunda of cast-in-place concrete serves as a touchstone for circulation throughout the wing, providing a smooth transition from old to new. This addition filled out the available building sites on the Museum’s grounds and completed the comprehensive program of reorganization, restoration, and expansion.
