The club’s historic building, designed by Furness and Evans (1896-97), and numerous later additions were studied to improve existing facilities and plan for future recreational and social needs. A master plan was produced to guide a series of renovations and additions to the buildings and grounds. Phase I work included the addition of a building with four international size squash courts, a sports lounge/café overlooking the club lawns, renovated squash court and pro shop facilities, enclosed circulation from the women’s locker rooms, mechanical and other systems upgrades, and improvements to service areas and parking. The lounge/café is prominently located adjacent to the Furness building and successfully blends with it without trying to mimic any of Furness’ trademark mannerisms. It is a fresh, contemporary interpretation of traditional motifs.
