This $17 million mixed-use Garage, Classroom and Retail facility redefines the western portal of downtown Camden, representing the first physical improvements to the city under New Jersey’s Camden Revitalization Act of 2002.  In determining the parking demand at this site an increased capacity for 649 cars resulted from the 500 programmed.  An investigation of numerous combinations of program uses yielded an increased second-floor classroom area of 36,000 SF and a 29,000 SF first floor retail/conference space.

Designed to achieve a superior relationship to the sidewalks and street, the overall massing of the garage and its elevations are keys to affirming this collegiate connection.  Located in a designated Historic District, the building draws its cues from neighboring structures, featuring brick and cast-stone detailing on the facades.  Above, painted aluminum louvers shield a two-bay, double helix garage from view while maintaining natural ventilation flow.  At the base, the building’s storefront relationship to the public right-of-way creates an exterior atmosphere for education and commerce, while enhancing public safety as evidenced by the ground floor collegiate bookstore with limited-service cafe and outdoor seating which energizes the pedestrian experience.
