Extensive remodeling and the reorganization of Philadelphia’s busiest commuter rail station, a historically significant facility built in 1930, created a vibrant commercial hub to service the City’s Central Business District. Covering more than three square city blocks beneath 15th through 18th Streets west of City Hall, Suburban Station and its surrounding retail concourse connects directly to the Penn Center high-rise office complex above, and to the rest of the city’s commuter systems via a network of pedestrian passageways. Street level signage and entry portals give the underground center well needed visibility and facilitate movement into the station and circulation throughout the concourse and more than 100,000 SF of retailing and service operations.
While historic fabric was retained and restored wherever possible to preserve the character of the original facility, electronic technology, building systems, signage and finishes were introduced throughout to create an exciting and marketable retail environment and provide efficiency, comfort, and security consistent with the Station’s key position in the City’s fully integrated multi-use commercial community.
