BLT developed a master plan with five and 10-year
strategies for the Baldwin School, an independent educational institution
for girls and young women. The
plan addressed life safety, accessibility, and other code compliance issues;
the preservation of historic buildings; the harmonious integration of systems
and structures; and reconfiguration of site circulation and open space.
“The Residence,” a landmark 1880’s building designed by
Frank Furness, serves as the centerpiece of the campus. Renovated in
stages while occupied, the initial phases included re-roofing and conversion
of unused basement space for the art and music departments. The 157,000
SF building’s main public spaces, a bi-level great room with grand
fireplaces and sweeping stairways, and the adjacent multi-purpose assembly
hall were refurbished and relit. Two thirds of the budget expenditure
is hidden in the total replacement of heating, plumbing, and electrical systems,
a fire sprinkler system, and network data cabling in rewireable raceways
to expand computer use from the lab into the classroom.
Additional projects included renovation and reorganization of Lower, Middle,
and Upper School facilities including the library; expansion of the Science
Building; and renovations to the pool and volleyball gymnasium.
