Planning for the early 20th century Cope and Stewardson
Jacobean Revival dormitory began with the design of essential fire towers,
sprinklers, and other code-mandated life safety systems to increase safety
and provide additional student rooms in previously unusable attic space
and upper tower levels. Skylights used for light and ventilation of the
rooms kept changes to the building's historic exterior appearance to a
minimum. Classroom and
studio spaces were also recaptured from under used areas.
Mechanical and electrical systems along with plumbing systems for the renovated kitchenettes and bathrooms were upgraded without visual intrusion of the interior historic character and the exquisitely detailed entrance hall and lounges were restored and refurnished to support contemporary student life. All work was carefully planned so that necessary construction could be carried out in the course of the summer recess, without impacting the use of the dormitory during the regular school year.
