The School of Forest Resources Building is part of a three-building composition that defines a new sub-campus in University Park. This 96,000 SF, five-story classroom and laboratory building consists of a curved volume of classrooms and faculty offices that defines the edge of the Great Meadow, a research laboratory bar that faces Bigler Road, and a four-story glass-enclosed atrium - the Alumni Commons - that links the two. This celebratory space will serve as the primary venue for informal meetings among students, faculty, and staff. An adjacent outdoor garden provides additional space for formal events and casual relaxation, with views of the Meadow beyond. Major entries link the building to pedestrian circulation on all sides.
Common facilities are provided on the first floor, including classrooms, teaching laboratories, and a 200-seat, tiered-floor auditorium outfitted with full capability audio-visual display and internet access. Each academic department occupies a separate floor, with each level containing its own faculty, administrative offices and research laboratories to promote departmental communication and identity.
The Forest Resources building is the first lab building at Penn State seeking LEED certification for sustainable design.
