This 180,000 SF biomedical research laboratory is part
of the complex of healthcare, research and educational facilities adjacent
to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital. An unusual requirement was that
the building was built above a previously constructed chiller plant - also
designed by BLT - the master plan of which provided options for overbuild
in keeping with the University’s growth and prominence in the field
of biomedical research. Construction scheduling was critical, since existing
cooling towers had to be shut down, relocated to the roof of the laboratory
overbuild, and brought back on line in six month’s time to provide
uninterrupted service to the University’s critical medical facilities
during the peak cooling season.
A dramatic double height lobby rises alongside the preexisting chiller plant. Ground and mezzanine levels of the building are reserved for shared meeting facilities and administrative functions, including school-wide security. Eight floors of flexible, generic bench lab facilities surround shared tissue culture labs, autoclaves, darkrooms, electron microscopy, and other core support facilities at the center of the plan. Offices, conference rooms and lounges are located at the corners to maximize views and facilitate interaction.
