The 85,500 SF Master Plan development incoporated a three-phase program to provide adequate space and state-of-the art facilities needed to serve the existing student population of Chestnut Hill Academy. This included additions to the school’s Dining Commons and replacement of the existing Gymnasium with a new 14,900 SF Gymnasium facility (Phase I); along with planning for a new 48,000 SF Field House, and a two-story 13,000 SF Science Building, for Phases II and III, respectively.
The prestigious independent school for boys was founded in 1861 and has been located at its present location in the historic Wissahickon Inn and its 25 acre site since 1901. The Wissahickon Inn Building, constructed in 1883-1884, is listed on the National Register and the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places and is typical of the late-Victorian stone buildings that characterize much of Chestnut Hill. The design challenge for the master planning efforts is to preserve the vocabulary of this historic structure and its campus over three phases of demolition and construction.
