Strong foundations
To keep the top edge of the building’s granite base consistent around the perimeter of the building necessitated working out with the structural engineer about 16 unique conditions at the perimeter of the first floor concrete slab. This was due to competing demands of sloping finish grade, areas of cantilevered slab, and the desire to have the bottom of granite submerged no more than 3-4″ below grade. The conditions will be communicated to the contractor through spot elevations on a slab edge plan, as well as section drawings on both the architectural and structural drawings. – Nicholas Brown, AIA, LEED AP BD+C
