BLT Architects names winners of student design competition

University of Hartford student Marco Aguilera will be spending next summer as an intern with BLT Architects(BLTa) as the winner of the firm’s third annual Student Design Sketch Competition.

Aguilera will also receive a $500 cash prize for submitting the first place entry. Runner-up Tristan Emig of Philadelphia University will also receive $500, and third place contestant Nicholas Fucci, also from the University of Hartford, will receive $250.

The sketch competition is designed to test students’ ability to think creatively about a design problem in a short period of time – sort of an architectural 100-yard dash. This year, students were challenged to come up with a conceptual design for a community housing and services facility for homeless men and women in the “El Centro de Oro” neighborhood at 238-40 W. Allegheny Ave. The goals included sparking reuse of available vacant land and creating a safe place for homeless individuals to learn re-entry skills for neighborhood life.
