Description

The renovation of the Center City Strawbridge & Clothier Department Store reuses and improves an existing retail building on Market Street East and is in the densest urban area in the Delaware Valley. The building is an historical landmark (Architect, Grant M. Simon, 1930) that is being cleaned, repaired and preserved for continued long-term use by new retail shoppers and office tenants. The preservation of the landmark structure is a primary focus of much of the work, both inside and out, and has been carefully planned to complement the efforts of green design goals. The continued use Strawbridge’s, and of the energy embodied in the existing physical structure, is in keeping with the goals of green design. There are few examples of a project that achieves both LEED certification and historic preservation, especially at the scale of the Strawbridge’s renovations. The improvements are intended to attract new shoppers and make an excellent environment for office staff.
